We are excited to share that Maureen Kerrigan, a Financial Advisor at RBC Wealth Management – U.S. in Providence, Narragansett resident, and longtime Star Kids board member was named one of three national finalists for the 2020 @investinothers Volunteer of the Year Award. The Invest in Others awards program recognizes the charitable work of financial advisors in communities across the country. Advisors are nominated for actively giving back to nonprofits to improve their communities and make a difference in the lives of others. Maureen’s impact will be greater this year thanks to the IiO grant of $15,000 to Star Kids in recognition of Maureen’s efforts to make a difference in her community.
Maureen has certainly earned this honor for the good work she has done for our Star Kids students. Maureen first heard of Star Kids in 2009 when she was reviewing grant requests for the RBC Foundation and soon after joined our board of directors. Maureen firmly believes that education and a solid family support system are essential foundations for all children and that Star Kids helps create these foundations when they are missing. In addition to her commitment and hard work as a board member, she and her husband, Jeff Dentler, have sponsored a student since he entered Kindergarten. During this time, Maureen witnessed the benefits of our program on her student “A” and his family. His mother enrolled in college part-time after seeing her children excel in private school and receiving the support they needed in and out of the classroom from Star Kids.
Maureen’s enthusiasm for the power of the Star Kids Scholarship Program is so great that her daughter, Courtney Mahoney, and friend, Liz Fisher, became sponsors to “A”’s sister. Child sponsors are the fuel of our program. Each of our students is matched with an individual or group willing to contribute toward the student’s education. Because of the scholarship funding sponsors donate, Star Kids students are given the opportunity to receive a quality education that helps them believe in themselves and envision a brighter, self-driven future.
Our child sponsors like Maureen and Jeff have been able to see the direct impact they are having on a child’s life when they receive a child’s report card, school photo and a letter from our executive director about their student. Child sponsors may meet their student as the various Star Kids community events we hold each year, or remain anonymous.
We are grateful for Maureen’s dedication as a Star Kids’ board member, child sponsor and advocate.
