At A Glance
Our students typically enroll in the New Bedford Star Kids Scholarship Program between Kindergarten and Grade Four. Since the inception of the New Bedford Chapter, 98% of our students have graduated from high school, while 95% have enrolled in a two or four year college program or a trade school.
The characteristics of the 67 children enrolled in the program during the 2014-15 school year are as follows:
45 children are Caucasian, 5 are Cape Verdean, 2 are Cape Verdean & Caucasian, 9 are African-American, 2 are African-American & Caucasian, 2 are Haitian and 2 are Hispanic.
75% have a parent with a history of incarceration.
100% have a parent with a history of heroin and/or cocaine addiction including alcohol abuse.
54% are living in a single parent family.
14% are living in a two parent family.
10% are living with grandparents (2 are w/aunt & uncle).
17% are living with a biological parent and a step-parent.
5% are adopted (3 are in foster care).
100% are receiving services from partnering social services agencies.
Since the inception of the New Bedford Star Kids Scholarship Program, 18 students have graduated from high school.
