On May 5th, Starry Night on the Water 2017 took place at the historic New Bedford Whaling Museum with close to 130 people in attendance! Ellen Lough, Executive Director welcomed the crowd, spoke about the challenges of addiction, and dedicated the evening to the parents and guardians who are raising our New Bedford Star Kids: “Addiction is a disease just like cancer is or just like diabetes is. It is a brain disease and it affects all walks of life. Approximately 100% of our New Bedford Star Kids have a parent who is struggling with addiction. Many of our New Bedford Star Kids’ parents are in recovery. And many of our New Bedford Star Kids’ parents and guardians have no issues with addiction yet have found themselves raising our New Bedford Star Kids as single parents, step parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents and adoptive parents, because many of our New Bedford Star Kids’ parents are in a rehabilitation facility or are incarcerated.” Tim Flanigan, M.D., Founder and Board Chair, followed Ellen’s speech with a very poignant overview of the mission and history of both chapters of the Star Kids Scholarship Program. Their speeches were capped off with extraordinary presentations from two of our New Bedford Star Kids, Jordan Augustine, Grade 10, Nazarene Christian Academy and Joshua Pierre, Grade 11, Bishop Stang High School. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, followed by a family-style dinner and live auction. A silent auction of wish boxes; donations towards summer camp experiences, driving lessons, tutoring, after school programs, field trips, uniforms and books took place throughout the evening. Several partial and full scholarships were donated during our live auction. Live auction items included: Golf at New Bedford Country Club, hand-knit 100% wool throw, Robert Duff print, Brahmin weekender bag, Russell Morin $1500 gift card, Sakonnet Point Club paddle boarding and lunch, John Saunders New England clam boil with lobsters, Catch a Striper fishing experience, Golf at Newport Country Club, Boston Red Sox tickets, Hamilton tickets, Nantucket Basket tray with Star Kids logo and a Brahmin evening of shopping experience. Guests and New Bedford Star Kids were treated to a surprise visit by defensive Patriots player, Geneo Grissom! Approximately $45,000 was raised for the event and will be allocated directly to student program expenses.
