Annual Children’s Events – Building Community
Children’s events are an important part of our program for a number of reasons. Our outings provide an opportunity for the children and families to come together as a community. The students in our program feel they are a part of something important that inspires them to do their best. The gatherings also allow us to talk with the children throughout the year outside of school. We catch up on how they are doing and hear about their hopes for future academic plans. Five children’s events are held each year for students and their families. Mentors, sponsors and board members often attend these events and interact with the children.

Gathering in October allows us to meet everyone after the start of a new school year. We often plan an outdoor activity and take advantage of our beautiful surroundings. Portsmouth Abbey School community service students have hosted a Fall Fun Day for many years and treat our students to an afternoon of fun and games! Past outings in the past include Ballard Park In Newport and the Corn Maze at Escobar’s Farm in Portsmouth.
St. George’s School. Star Kid students and family members join the St. George’s School hockey teams for an afternoon of skating fun! Skate time is 12:30PM – 2:00PM. Meet in the rear lobby between Noon and 12:30PM. St. George’s Ice Rink is located at 372 Purgatory Road, Middletown, RI
Students are invited to attend the Abbey Player’s winter musical production. Star Kids are matched with an Abbey high school student for the evening to enjoy dinner and the show.
In June, we reward our hard-working students with a party at the Caddy Shack in North Dartmouth, MA. Children and families enjoy bumper boats, batting cages, and mini-golf.
Each summer, everyone is invited to a Gulls game in Newport. This often is a chance for us to become better acquainted with new students and families starting school in September and offers current students an opportunity to build on budding friendships with other Star Kids.
