It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the cancellation of our Derby Time event, scheduled for Saturday, September 5th, at Ochre Court. Salve Regina University has decided, based on current statewide restrictions put in place by our Governor and the Rhode Island Department of Health, to not allow external events through Labor Day weekend.
While we are disappointed we will not gather with friends and supporters and hear from our high school graduates at our annual event, we remain determined to assist our students now more than ever. This year, our eleven high school seniors are all college-bound, and eight of them are among the first generation in their families to attend college. We celebrate their hard-earned accomplishments and are inspired to continue to help more at-risk children realize their potential through education.
The shut-down of schools has proven to us just how important the safe and nurturing environments of our schools are to our Star Kids students and how vital our wrap-around supports are to their well-being and success. Our annual fundraiser plays a major role in funding these two crucial pieces of our program, scholarships and wrap-around supports.
This year’s event sponsors have generously agreed to have their funds remain with us to support our educational program expenses this school year, and for that we are most grateful. To fill the gap left by our cancelled Scholarship Auction, our dynamic Derby Time committee, led by Event Chair Tori Hill, are initiating a Scholarship Fund Drive so that we may accept new students, and fully fund our current students, in the upcoming school year. We have applicants waiting to be accepted and promises made to our current students; it is at the heart of our mission, and indeed, our responsibility, that we do this for our local children in need. So, while our party is off, our purpose is ON.
Our Star Kids students and family members know they are not alone during this COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to you and the rest of our caring and dedicated community. We look forward to holding our Kentucky Derby party on Saturday, May 1, 2021 to help our hard-working Star Kids continue to “go the distance”, and we look forward to having you with us!
“The Star Kids program has been a great support for my daughter, L., and myself during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a very stressful and unsettling time as I worry about how this will affect my daughter. Star Kids makes us feel like family and that we will get through this together. They keep us connected through email, calls and video char. Star Kids is more to us than a program; they are one of the most consistent pieces of my daughter’s life. I cannot thank them enough.” – Mailinda R., parent
